Data Science for Social Good Conference is focused on highlighting the  successes, opportunities, and challenges faced by the growing Data Science for Social Good community by bringing key members from Governments, Non-Profits, Academia, and the Private Sector together to share best practices, learn from each other, and generate new collaboration opportunities.

What types of sessions are going to be there?

Training workshops will be interactive and hands-on, and will include both technical workshops for students and data scientists as well as workshops for managers and executives on how to use data to improve policy. Examples from 2016 include:

  • What is Data Science and How Can you Use it for Public Policy and Social Good?
  • How to Scope Data Science Projects?
  • How to Assess your Data Maturity?
  • How to Build Data Science Teams?

We will have presentations and talks from students, practitioners, and researchers. Topics will include:

  • Case Studies (using data science for social good and policy)
  • Open Problems and Challenges in Government Agencies that could use Data Science
  • Data Science Education
  • New Research Challenges
  • New Methods that solve social good and policy problems

Poster topics will include:

  • Case Studies (using data science for social good and policy)
  • Open Problems and Challenges in Government Agencies that could use Data Science
  • Data Science Education
  • New Research Challenges
  • New Methods that solve social good and policy problems

We plan to run panel discussions on:

  • Building collaboration opportunities between universities and local governments and non-profits
  • Creating data science training programs that focus on social good
  • Training government agencies and non profits in data analysis
  • Ethics and Fairness in Data Science

We plan to have small discussion groups led by facilitators. Topics from previous conferences include:

  • Building Data Science Teams
  • Replicability of Data Science Solutions in Cities
  • Ethical Issues in Data Science for Social Good
  • Challenges in Data Maturity (Data Collection in Non-Profits)
  • Managing Team and Stakeholder Relationships in Data Science Projects
